Surviving The Winter Madness

Mother Nature is truly mind-boggling. While some countries face mild winters, others witness below freezing temperature. As amazing as our mother nature is, it is quite scary as well. But what is more amazing is the fact that us Humans can adapt to the environment in any part of the world.

To survive the harsh weather we should have enough knowledge about the situation we are in and learn basic survival skills to overcome any difficulties. Here is what you should know if you are visiting or living in a city like Verkhoyansk (Russia), Hell (Norway), Barrow (Alaska), Greenland etc where temperatures can drop to below -40 degrees Celsius.

Cover & Hydration

Wear loose-fitting, light weighted clothes. Cover yourselves with layers and most important part is to wear hats or caps so that the body heat does not escape from your head or neck. Avoid Sweating: Freezing weather and wet clothes is a lethal combination. If possible avoid overexertion.

Light Weight Layers: Avoid Cotton material at all cost. Invest in Polyester, polypropylene, silk and wool clothes. Synthetics and Natural Fibers can be your best friends in winters.

Stay Hydrated: Staying hydrated will keep your nervous system running smoothly. You can also melt the snow and consume it.

Your worst enemies in harsh winter weather

1. Frostbite: Frostbites can occur in 5 minutes if the temperature drops to -15 degrees Celsius. To reverse the frost nip effect is to rewarm the affected area.

2. Hypothermia: Hypothermia can occur if your body temperature falls to 99 degrees Fahrenheit. Be gentle with your core organs. Seek medical help immediately. Warm yourself with blankets, fire, hot water etc.

3. Hypoglycemia: This can occur when your body’s energy decreases. Cold and the stress of being in a life threatening situation can cause hypoglycemia. Snacks come in handy in this situation. Eat carbohydrates and simple sugars. Munch on fruits and vegetables.

If you can keep away from these 3 conditions, you can survive the deadly winters.
